Midnight Sun

Ground shifts and breaks apart,
moving away in great flows.
The white bear slithers on his belly
to find food on disappearing land.

His ribs rattle, stomach sucks empty.
Amidst a wash of blood he hunts
but fails. Beneath fey northern lights
tonight the life bequeathed to ice gods
will be his own.

Soon the joy of snow, twisted
patterns of flurries where bears roll
and slide, will give way
before the never-setting sun.

hi Chris, thanks for commenting. I was watching Planet Earth on TV when I wrote this. I don't like to watch those programmes much now because they're so bleak.
When i was a kid it was fascinating to watch animal programmes and get to see animals up close and learn about them but now the programmes all seem to be about what's dying out and what's endangered or how their environment is being damaged and eroded. It's very depressing.

Tell me about it, my kids all think the planet is dying by degrees, which is one hell of a burden for the next generation to carry

I wish someone, some scientist somewhere would just once say

"Hey, don't be sad, its not so bad after all, my indisputable evidence points to the planet being just fine"

Doubt it will happen though

*wry grin*

I worry about the long term effects of telling kids all this bad stuff.

I saw an ad on TV last night for one of those weightloss programs. There was this kid in tears and these stupid keep fit diet gurus telling him if he kept eating too much he was going to die.

What are kids supposed to make of that? He probably thinks he's going to drop dead tomorrow!

I agree with you, we were never bombarded with this sort of thing as children, we were allowed to be kids, allowed to grow and mature enough to be capable of dealing with adult issues when we were old enough to do so.

Now, for them, there is no escape, and they are scared, you can see it, the world is a big friggin scary place waiting for them.

And its not all like that, but the media tells them that it is.
